AMC Frequently asked questions

Q1. Can Mast Climber and Hoist electrical cables be repaired?

A1. 'Due to the size and cost of the cords associated with this type of equipment, every effort is made to minimize replacement costs to our customers. Osha allows for the proper repair of cords 12 guage and larger. When a cord is deemed repairable, AMC's technicians;

  • Splice the cable with the appropriatly sized butt-splice.
  • Individually wrap each conductor with waterproof rubber splicing tape.
  • After each conductor is wrapped individually, the four conductors are then wrapped as a unit again with waterproof rubber splicing tape.
  • Our proprietary fiber meshed strain relief is applied a minimum of twelve inches to either side of the splice to bring the cable as close as possible to it's original integrity.
  • The final step is to wrap the entire spliced area of the cable with a waterproof vinyl electrical tape, a process which brings the repair as close as possible to the characteristics of the original outer jacket of the cable.

Please see OSHA docs below:

1910.305(g)(2) -- Identification, Splices, and Terminations
(i) -- A conductor of a flexible cord or cable that is used as a grounded conductor or an equipment grounding conductor shall be distinguishable from other conductors. Types SJ, SJO, SJT, SJTO, S, SO, ST, and STO shall be durably marked on the surface with the type designation, size, and number of conductors.
(ii) -- Flexible cords shall be used only in continuous lengths without splice or tap. Hard service flexible cords No. 12 or larger may be repaired if spliced so that the splice retains the insulation, outer sheath properties, and usage characteristics of the cord being spliced.
(iii) -- Flexible cords shall be connected to devices and fittings so that strain relief is provided which will prevent pull from being directly transmitted to joints or terminal screws.
